Everyone knows that the Winchester Public Library is THE place to go for books. But not everyone knows that the library is also a full-time art gallery!
The library's permanent art collection includes the Winchester Bowl, a silver punch bowl that once belonged to Col. William Winchester; murals in the Large Meeting Room and over the Circulation desk; paintings in the Reference Room, Large Meeting Room, and Administration offices; photographs; quilts; and sculptures both inside and outside the building. The Reference Room also has the Tyler Memorial Windows, stained glass windows designed by Tiffany & Co.
The library also has an active program of art exhibitions, which typically change every month (information for exhibitors is here). On display for August 2025 are landscapes and abstract paintings by Mizanul Chowdhury, an MIT space scientist who is also a gifted artist; and nautical models by Winchester resident Dan Schlossberg.
Stop by the library during August (or any time) and seek out the art on display. Exhibition information is usually on a cabinet to the left of the front door (near the Large Meeting Room). Don't hesitate to ask for more information at the reference desk. And look for the Art in the Library booklet, which has more information on the history and location of the permanent artworks.
